Day 8: Where Does Joy Come From?
“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.”
Joy is something we all seek. Have you ever met someone who doesn’t want to experience joy? Probably not. The problem is that most of the time joy seems to be a temporary, fleeting emotion. We feel joy when we are on a vacation but the trip comes to an end, we find joy in a relationship but we get into an argument, we find joy in a career but our job changes.
If joy is desired but often fleeting where then do we get lasting joy? Paul writes to the Romans that the God of hope has the ability to fill them with all joy and peace (more on peace next week). In this passage Paul is speaking about how God is not only a God of the Jews, but for the Gentiles as well. He is a God of hope for all people. Because of that truth we are all able to have access to true joy that comes from him.
How do we find that joy? We get it as we trust in God. Finding real joy is a change in perspective, a change in the way we approach life. Instead of finding joy in circumstances, accomplishments and relationships we are are to bring God to the centre of all aspects of our lives. All things change, but God is constant. If our joy is found in he who is constant then it will remain in all highs and lows. In order to find joy we need to ask ourselves how much we’re trusting God. If you find that a situation, person, or task is sucking the joy out of you, ask yourself if you are trusting God in that area.
When we find ourselves full of joy we begin to overflow with hope. Our outlook changes and it’s evident to those around us. It is important to know that this is not something we do by our own will to be joyful, but through the power of the Holy Spirit.
Take a moment to think about what may be taking joy from you right now and surrender it to God. Trust that he will bring hope to whatever it is. Then ask for the power of his Holy Spirit to change your outlook, to bring joy into whatever area it is missing and into your very soul.
Prayer: Lord, I surrender the joy suckers in my life. I surrender my ability to overcome them. I trust that you have the power in all areas of my life and that you will give me the power of your Spirit so that I may find hope and be filled with your joy. Amen.
