Blessed in the Mess: Confronting Our Comfort

Use these discussion questions with your small group, friends, family, or for individual reflection.

  1. Robyn said, “comfort compromises compassion.” When you think about standing with the marginalized, speaking for the voiceless, and challenging the status quo in the name of justice (Jesus), where might you need to get a little more uncomfortable?
  2. Jesus’ definition of the “good life” is radically different from our contemporary views of success and happiness. What does your good life look like if you are living for yourself versus living for Jesus?
  3. Beyond physical persecution, what are some less visible forms of persecution that people might experience today, especially within faith communities?
  4. Have you felt the relational (or financial) pain of the decision Lakeside made last year to be an inclusive and safe space? What has that cost you and how might this be transformational in your life? Where can you see Jesus at work?
  5. How does the idea that “when you have something worth dying for, you have something worth living for” reshape our priorities and actions as followers of Jesus? What might it look like to live fearlessly and love radically?
  6. What is the good you hesitate to do because of the cost?
  7. What are you looking most forward to about heaven?
