Use these discussion questions with your small group, family, friends, or for personal reflection.

  1. Do you feel comfortable thinking about God in non-masculine terms? Why or why not?
  2. If the idea of God as both masculine and feminine makes you uncomfortable, what do you think is at the root of that discomfort? How can we approach this tension with openness and humility?
  3. The Bible says that God created humanity in His own image, male and female. What does this verse suggest about the nature of God?
  4. In ancient society, the role of the father was central to family life and identity. How do you think the modern-day understanding of fatherhood differs from that in the time of Jesus, and how does this affect our understanding of God as our Father?
  5. The idea that “my flourishing can’t be at the expense of your flourishing” suggests a shared responsibility for one another. How does this principle challenge or reinforce the way we think about social justice, community, and personal success?
  6. Reflecting on the idea of God as Provider, Redeemer, and Mentor, which of these roles do you feel most connected to in your own life? Are there areas where you long to experience God in a new way?
