Dive In: Read or listen to this passage (Luke 7:18-28) in an unfamiliar translation of the Bible (e.g. New Living Translation or The Message). What stands out to you? Words? Phrases? Ideas?
Reflect:
- How did Jesus’ response to John and lack of rescue impact you?
- Have you had a time in your life when you felt abandoned or ignored by God? Describe how you felt through that time if you can. What helped you wade through the mystery and confusion? What was unhelpful?
- How are you encouraged knowing that “great” men and women of faith have had moments of doubt and even crises of faith (e.g. Abraham, Moses, John the Baptizer, Mother Teresa)?
- Jesus said in v. 28 that of those born of women there is no one greater than John, “yet the least in the Kingdom of God is greater than he.” Discuss: What do you think Jesus means by this? Does it challenge or inform your idea of “greatness” in the life of faith?
