These questions are connected to the message, Stuff You Didn’t Hear in Sunday School: Cain & Abel, from Sunday, March 10, 2024. You can watch it here.
- What stood out for you from this message? What challenged you, inspired you, or confused you?
- Did you grow up with the theology of original sin or being born with a sin nature? If so, how did this impact what you believed about yourself and real and actual choices you have?
- If you answered no to the question above, what does the word sin mean to you? And did that change after hearing this message?
- How do you feel about yourself in this moment, knowing that you have a creator willing to offer help and wisdom rather than condemnation when you’re in trouble? What does that do for your soul?
- How does God’s question about Abel’s whereabouts demonstrate concern for human relationships and the value God places on every individual?
- What lessons can we draw from Cain’s response to God’s question regarding the importance of acknowledging our responsibilities toward others in our community?
- Sin is anything that gets in the way of loving God and loving people. Where in your life do you feel you might be letting sin get in the way of loving God or loving people?
- God’s question to Cain: “Where is your brother?” is a question that rings through the ages. To love our neighbour (brother) we have to see them – to know where they are. Who are some “neighbours/brothers/sisters” that you are learning to see? Discuss this mutual caring/accountability aspect of our shared humanity.
- As Jesus followers, it’s our calling to care for one another. Where can you move toward community at Lakeside (or in your church if Lakeside isn’t your church home)? What next step can you take to love others? Can you get involved on a serving team? Join a group? Attend Celebrate Recovery? Serve in your community? Check in with your neighbour?
